背景介绍(Background)：

This protein is the anterior pituitary hormone prolactin. This secreted hormone is a growth regulator for many tissues, including cells of the immune system. It may also play a role in cell survival by suppressing apoptosis, and it is essential for lactation. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants that encode the same protein. Prolactin (PRL) is a polypeptide hormone that is mainly synthesized and secreted by lactotroph cells of the anterior pituitary gland. In addition to the pituitary, human PRL (hPRL) is independently and differentially expressed at multiple sites that include the endometrium, myometrium, decidua, immune cells, brain, breast, prostate, skin, and adipose tissue. The secretion of PRL by lactotrophs drives a range of responses that are crucial for the feeding of offspring, including mammary epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation as well as neurogenesis, which is essential for maternal behaviour in both mammals and nonmammalian species. In addition to its crucial role in lactation, many other functions have been attributed to PRL in multiple species, including roles in metabolism, skin and hair follicles, bone homeostasis, maternal care and adrenal function. The actions of PRL are mediated by its transmembrane receptor, PRLR. PRL interact with the PRLR on cells and activate signaling pathways such as AKT, STAT5 and MAPK, which promote survival, proliferation or differentiation.
